The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday suspended orders to exhume the body of renowned television journalist Amir Liaquat Hussain for an autopsy.

The children of the slain TV host had approached the Sindh High Court against the orders issued by the Judicial Magistrate in Karachi.

The Judicial Magistrate (East) on Saturday granted the request for an autopsy of the deceased anchor person, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his residence earlier this month.

Members of Hussain's stranger family, who had come only for his last rites, decided to challenge the magistrate's orders in the Sindh High Court.

During the hearing, counsel for the petitioners, Zia Awan, argued that the Judicial Magistrate had hastily issued the order on the request of autopsy and death of a random citizen while Hussain's family had never been in his favor.

"The petition was a publicity stunt on which the family's position was not properly heard," Awan said.

The court granted the petition against the removal of Hussain's body and issued a restraining order against the order of the Judicial Magistrate. It also issued notice to Abdul Ahad - the post-mortem petitioner and other defendants in the case - instructing the parties to submit their answers at the next hearing.

The exhumation was to take place tomorrow morning (June 23), according to a notification issued by the Sindh Health Department on Tuesday. A six-member medical board has been formed for the postmortem. Police Surgeon Dr. Samia Syed will head the board.

Hussein's first wife, Dr. Bushra Iqbal, has been opposing the autopsy since his death. In response to the order, Bushra raised a number of questions about Hussein's autopsy.

He urged fans to speak out against the autopsy because it was "a painful procedure for the dead and Islam does not allow it".
