Intelligence agencies investigate foreign correspondence, find evidence of conspiracy, National Security Committee


A meeting of the National Security Committee was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in which former Pakistani Ambassador to the United States Asad Majeed gave a briefing on the alleged threatening post.



 What was the point of the no-confidence motion in the letter which the Prime Minister termed as threatening?


 According to the statement, minutes of the last meeting of the National Security Committee were also presented. The meeting of National Security Committee was also attended by Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Chiefs of Air Staff and Navy.


 The meeting was attended by former Pakistani Ambassador to the US Asad Majeed and senior civil and military officials including Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar.  The statement from the meeting said that the intelligence agencies had investigated the letter and found no evidence of foreign conspiracy. The investigation by the security agencies concluded that there was no external conspiracy. The meeting also ratified the decisions of the last meeting of the National Security Committee.



 Former Pakistani Ambassador to the US Asad Majeed briefed the National Security Committee.


 The committee discussed the telegram received from the Pakistani embassy in Washington. Asad Majeed gave a briefing on the context and content of his telegram.


 According to the statement, the security agencies have informed the National Security Committee that no evidence of conspiracy has been found.


 What about foreign letters?


 It may be recalled that on March 27, 2022, PTI Chairman and then Prime Minister Imran Khan waved a letter during a rally in Islamabad, claiming that a conspiracy to overthrow his government was being hatched by a very powerful country. Done


 Later, the Foreign Office issued a de-marsh protest against the US Secretary of State in Islamabad over the issue.


 A meeting of the National Security Committee chaired by the then Prime Minister Imran Khan was held on March 31 on the same issue.

 The NSC expressed concern over the language used by the foreign diplomat and took the position that foreign correspondence was tantamount to open interference in Pakistan's internal affairs, any kind of interference in Pakistan's internal affairs is intolerable and internal affairs. Interference in any case is not acceptable.


 According to the statement, the language used by the foreign official is non-diplomatic, keeping in view the diplomatic etiquette.


 The statement said that a strong protest letter would be sent to the country concerned in Islamabad and its capital while a strong protest letter would be issued through the official channel.


 Later, after the success of the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan, Prime Minister-elect Shahbaz Sharif in his first speech had announced to convene a meeting of the National Security Committee on the issue of the alleged threatening letter.
